Pre-requisite Courses: Children of Trauma & Resilience and Structured Sensory Interventions II

Course Overview: Trauma-Informed Expressive Art Therapy offers a journey into the experiential world and work of expressive arts, and provides a foundation from which to build new therapies for clients. The content is presented in the form of readings and experiential activities (no video content is included), through which participants will explore some of the main models of expressive therapies, identify the primary principles and premises that build a theory of expressive arts, and learn how to invite clients into an expressive experience with the arts. Each activity invites participants to move their body, paint, write, draw, and use music to explore and express with the hopes of learning, in a sensory way, about the healing and transformational power of the arts.

Learning Objectives:

Upon successful completion of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Describe expressive arts therapy in general, and specifically intermodal expressive arts therapy
  • Explain the concept of therapist as witness in the expressive arts therapy world
  • Be able to set up space for expressive arts experiences and strategize how to invite clients to the experience
  • Explain the variety of ways to work with the art, once it has “arrived”
  • Identify how the expressive arts can be used by the therapist for self-care
